A Beginner's Guide to Ski Bindings and DIN Settings

Skis get most of the attention when buying gear, but your bindings matter just as much - arguably more, since they're the safety-critical link between you, your boots, and your skis. This guide covers the basics: what bindings actually do, what "DIN" means, and why getting the setting right isn't something to guess at.

What Do Bindings Actually Do?

Bindings hold your boots securely to your skis - but just as importantly, they're designed to release your boot in a fall, reducing the risk of injury (particularly to knees and lower legs) by letting your leg twist free rather than staying locked to the ski.

That release function is the whole reason DIN settings exist.

What Is a DIN Setting?

DIN stands for Deutsches Institut für Normung, the German standards body that created the international scale used to calibrate binding release force. In plain terms: it's a number that tells the binding how much force should be needed before it releases your boot.

  • Lower DIN → releases more easily, needs less force
  • Higher DIN → requires more force before releasing, holds more firmly

Every binding has a DIN range (for example, "4–11" or "6–13"), representing the span of release force it can be adjusted across. You'll see this range listed on every MountainLoop binding listing.

What Determines Your DIN Setting?

Your correct DIN isn't a single fixed number - it's calculated from a combination of factors:

Height
Boot Sole Length
Age
Ability

These factors are combined using a standardised international chart (ISO 11088) that ski shops and technicians use to calculate your recommended setting. It's not a guess, and it's not just about how "strong" you feel - a lighter, less experienced skier and a heavier, aggressive expert will need very different settings even on the exact same ski.

Why You Shouldn't Just "Pick a Number"

It might be tempting to set your DIN yourself, or leave a second-hand pair on whatever setting the previous owner used - but this genuinely matters for your safety:

  • Too low, and bindings can release unexpectedly during normal, hard skiing - annoying at best, dangerous mid-turn at worst
  • Too high, and bindings may fail to release during a fall when they should, increasing injury risk

However carefully a second-hand ski has been inspected and restored, we always recommend having bindings professionally checked and calibrated to your own weight, ability, and boot before first use. This is standard practice for any ski setup, new or used — not a second-hand-specific precaution.

GripWalk, Alpine Soles, and Compatibility

One more thing worth knowing: not all boot soles are the same shape, and bindings need to match. Alpine (ISO 5355) soles are flat, while GripWalk (ISO 23223) soles have a rockered, grippier shape designed for easier walking off-snow. Many modern bindings (including plenty listed on MountainLoop, often marked "GW") are compatible with both - but it's worth double-checking your specific boots and bindings are compatible before mounting or adjusting anything, since mismatched sole types can affect how reliably a binding releases.

Buying Second-Hand: What This Means for You

Bindings themselves don't "wear out" from age the way edges or bases can - a well-maintained binding functions exactly as it should regardless of how many seasons it's seen. But the DIN setting on any second-hand pair reflects the previous owner's profile, not yours. Always treat the DIN as something to be reset for you personally, not something to inherit.
